Etsy vs Your Own Store: Where Should You Sell Digital Products? — Anna from VIKOC

The short answer

For Etsy digital products versus your own store, compare discovery, fees, presentation control and the work required to attract and support customers. Neither option guarantees sales; the right starting point depends on how buyers will find your offer.

Start with the same product

Our example is a pack of three original poster designs, delivered as PNG previews and editable SVG source files. Keep the product constant so the comparison is useful. Etsy's official guidance says digital items must be made or designed by the seller, and it distinguishes instant downloads from made-to-order files.

A ready-made pack belongs in the first category. A poster created for one customer's brief is a different offer. On your own store, make that distinction equally clear in the product description.

Discovery: Who brings the visitor?

On Etsy, your listing sits inside a marketplace where people can search and compare products. That gives you a marketplace context; it does not promise visibility or orders. On a separate creator store, your own content, relationships, or other marketing can lead people to a focused destination.

You still have to earn those visits. For a designer with an existing audience, a direct store link may fit the journey. For someone testing marketplace demand, Etsy may be a useful channel to investigate.

Delivery: Check the actual package

Check Etsy’s current file count, format and size limits before preparing your listing. Its supported formats include ZIP, so a package can contain multiple source files if it fits the applicable limits. Do not assume that every individual source format can be attached directly.

In a creator store, check that platform's current file rules and delivery method. A VIKOC digital product listing includes a delivery resource. Verify a completed customer purchase and delivery before sharing the listing widely.

Costs: Compare more than one fee

Etsy's published fee structure includes a twenty-cent listing fee and a six-point-five percent transaction fee. Payment processing is separate, and other charges can apply, including advertising, currency conversion, or a shop setup fee. Check your location and account conditions.

A separate store can have a different mix of subscription, payment processing, and optional tool costs. Do not compare Etsy's full cost with only another platform's headline subscription, or the other way around. Use the same price and sales assumptions for both calculations.

Control and workload: Make the tradeoff explicit

A separate store can give you a dedicated place to arrange your offers and explain your brand, within the platform's available features. That does not mean you own the platform or avoid its policies. A marketplace provides a shared shopping environment and its own rules.

In either case, you are responsible for accurate previews, usable files, and customer support. Choose a first route you can maintain well. If you later use both, check the rules and keep product versions and customer instructions consistent across channels.

Use a requirement checklist

RequirementWhat to verify
PaymentsSeller eligibility, supported methods and applicable processor fees
DeliveryThe purchased file or service reaches the customer as promised
Operating costSubscription, required apps, transaction charges and maintenance
DiscoveryA realistic source of relevant visitors, not assumed traffic

Try it with one real offer

Write two realistic discovery paths for the same poster pack: a relevant marketplace search and a link from your own helpful content. Compare what you can control and what still requires testing in each path.

Common questions

Does opening an Etsy shop guarantee traffic?

No. Marketplace discovery is an opportunity, not a promised number of visitors or buyers. Competition, relevance and the offer still affect the outcome.

Can I compare fees using only a transaction percentage?

No. Etsy lists several fee types, including listing, transaction and payment-related charges. Check applicable setup, advertising, country and currency conditions before calculating a total.
